Saints Peter and Paul Association
The Association is comprised of three sections: liturgical, charitable and cultural. In addition, there is a sports group with a football team participating in a “Vatican Championship”, a musical group with a liturgical choir and “Ottoni” brass instruments band and a doctors' group very involved in charitable work.
Volunteer work by the Association is carried out mainly at St. Peter’s Basilica where each day members assist with security, public order and support for pilgrims. Such assistance is heightened on Sundays, holidays and at celebrations presided over by the Holy Father. The liturgical section is often called upon to assist at important events in the Vatican. During the Jubilee Year the Association was entrusted with custodianship of the “Holy Door” of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The section for cultural activities undertakes various programmes of religious and moral formation in addition to the spiritual preparation of its own members.
The section for charitable activities is involved in efforts to help families in need. It works with the Vatican’s “Santa Marta” paediatric medical centre and the “Dono di Maria” House founded by Blessed Teresa of Calcutta inside the walls of Vatican City. The section also assists the Apostolic Almoner.
The spiritual assistants give special attention to aspiring members by providing regular catechetical courses as part of their two year preparation before admission.
