- Joseph Ratzinger was born on 16 April 1927 in Marktl-am-Inn in Bavaria, Germany. He was ordained a priest on 29 June 1951. He was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising on 25 March 1977 and consecrated Archbishop on 28 May 1977. Pope Paul VI created him a Cardinal in the Consistory of 27 June 1977. During the conclave of 19 April 2005 he was elected Supreme Pontiff.
