In 1983, Pope John Paul II created the Vatican Television Centre, a legally independent body in Vatican City State. It has the task of filming public events and ceremonies presided over by the Pope, or on his behalf, as well as all special ecclesiastical events. It has responsibility for archiving this footage and for making it available to television stations that request it. More than a TV station as such, the Vatican Television Centre is an agency at the service of other television networks. Pope John Paul II approved the Statute of CTV on May 11th 1998.
