To celebrate Christmas 2006, artistic treasures from among Vatican City's immense heritage were selected, especially works not ordinarily on view to the general public. This year nativity scene has been chosen from the Pope's Private Chapel, located in the heart of the Apostolic Palace. It is a particularly delicate and gracious piece in glass, which the artist Silvio Consadori (1909-1994) made for Pope Paul VI, a great admirer of modern and contemporary art and especially of this artist's work. On one side of the Holy Family are the Shepherds, who symbolize a simple faith, while on the other the Magi, who symbolize an intellectual faith. All are kneeling in front of the purity and glory of the Baby Jesus.
