During 2006 the Holy Father made four separate pastoral journeys to various countries. The first trip took him to Poland, the birthplace of John Paul II. Among the numerous stops, a particularly moving moment was his visit to the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. In July Benedict XVI travelled to Valencia, Spain, for the Fifth World Meeting of Families. His third trip took him to his native Germany where thousands of jubilant countrymen welcomed him. During the journey the Pope visited places where he grew up and especially those marking key steps in his journey of faith, taking him from Bavaria to Rome as Successor of the Apostle Peter. His final journey was to Turkey, a visit which included a historic meeting with H.H. Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, depicted together with the Pope on one of the stamps.
