A joint issue of the postal services of Malta and Vatican City marks the celebration of Christmas 2007. The stamp features a work by the painter Giuseppe Calì, who was born in La Valletta in 1846 and died there in 1930. He was of Neapolitan origin and studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples. He produced many works and was very well known and appreciated by his fellow countrymen. His works are conserved and exhibited in various churches in Malta. The painting of the Nativity depicted on the three stamps of this joint issue is found at the parish church of Luqa. The artist develops a unique composition, rich in expressions of gentleness and serenity. The Virgin Mary contemplates the baby Jesus, who is surrounded by female figures of various generations, while in the background Saint Joseph observes intently the comet in the sky.
