The XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops took place from 5 - 26 October 2008 on the theme: The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church. The Synod looked at how to deepen understanding of the unity between the bread of the Word and the Body of Christ, and between the liturgy of the Word and the Eucharist, since they are intimately bound together to constitute a single table of the Bread of Life. The Word of God is at the origin of a call and through the grace of the Holy Spirit it creates communion, inspires charitable work to help the poor and those needing material and spiritual help. Through its own dynamism, the Word of God opens hearts to mission so that whatever a Christian has received freely is then shared with others. The four postcards depict the first words of the four Gospels as seen in a 15th century illuminated manuscript “Bible of Federico da Montefeltro”. The image depicted on the postcard’s case and the Annunciation, printed on the stamps, are taken from a 15th century Missal. Both of them are kept in the Vatican Library.
