«Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a dark forest, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.». This tercet is perhaps the most famous by poet Dante Alighieri and will serve as the introduction for the Italian Language Day to be celebrated on 21 October at the International Festival of Philately in Rome. There will be a joint stamp issue of Vatican City, San Marino and Italy on the theme of Dante’s Divine Comedy. The stamps are part of a miniature sheet consisting of five values with depictions of Dante and Virgil taken from the Urbinate Latin Codex 365 of the Vatican Apostolic Library. There are also decorative seals with the first verse of the first tercet of Dante’s masterpiece, a symbol of the Italian language. This shared linguistic and cultural heritage is one of the primary reasons for this joint issue by the three countries. The two verses which follow are shown respectively on the decorative seals of San Marino and Italy.
