Apostolic Journeys of His Holiness Benedict XVI - 2008

Pope Benedict XVI made three pastoral journeys outside Italy during 2008. In the month of April he went to the United States, starting his visit in Washington, D.C. In the following days he gave an address to the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He also prayed at Ground Zero. His second journey took him to Australia for the XXIII World Youth Day in Sydney where he met young people from around the world for the customary prayer vigil marked by all the excitement typical of these events. In September Benedict XVI travelled to France for a four day visit. In Paris he met with French clergy in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and he celebrated Mass in front of the Hôtel des Invalides with 250,000 people in attendance. Later he went to Lourdes for the 150th anniversary of the apparitions and he celebrated Mass for the sick in front of the Basilica of Notre-Dame du Rosaire. The sketches for the stamps were made by the late Irio Ottavio Fantini, an artist who produced many designs of postal stamps for the Vatican and other countries. 23. September 2009
