CHRISTMAS 2012

CHRISTMAS 2012

The commemorative postage stamp for Christmas consists of two stamps and a booklet. The images chosen highlight details of works by János Hajnal (1913-2010), the Nativity of Our Lord and the Annunciation to Mary. Hajnal is considered one of the greatest Hungarian artists of the 1900s. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and worked in the cities of Frankfurt, Stockholm and Rome in particular where he lived from 1948 until his death. Most of his works consist of mosaics and stained glass of sacred subjects. He worked numerous times for the Vatican and also with the Philatelic office from 1983 onwards. His artwork is featured in a number of Roman churches (Basilica of Saint Mary Major, Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in EUR, Church of Saint Leo the Great), the large oval windows of the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican, the windows of the Duomo of Milan, and numerous places of worship throughout the Italian peninsula. In 1958 he obtained Italian citizenship for his artistic talent. Hajnal also became an illustrator of books through his collaboration with various newspapers and magazines. He was a multitalented artist and in 1998 was awarded by his native country with the highest honour in the field of culture, the Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. We continue his year, for the fourth consecu ive year, the traditional musical stamp issue with a Folder called "Die Nativitatis MMXII', containing the stamp series celebrating the Nativity of Jesus Christ and a Compact Disc with a collection of classic and popular Christmas songs.
