This year’s postage stamp issue celebrating the apostolic journeys of Pope Francis in 2014 features a miniature sheet and a series of stamps. The 3.00 euro miniature sheet is a joint issue with Israel and recalls the Pope’s historic journey to the Holy Land from 24 to 26 May. The stamp shows a detail of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as part of a panorama of the city of Jerusalem where the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is prominent. The philatelic series is composed of four values, chosen on the basis of the cost of sending a standard letter from the Vatican to the destination country visited by the Holy Father. The 2,30 euro value celebrates the Holy Father’s apostolic journey on the occasion of the 6th Asian World Youth Day, which took place in the Diocese of Daejeon, Korea, from 13 to 18 August. The stamp shows a depiction of the Blue House of Seoul, the residence of the President of the Republic of Korea, where state receptions are usually held. The other three values are 0.95 cents and recall the journey to Albania on 21 September, to Turkey from 28 to 30 November, and to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 25 November. The stamps feature the places representing the nations or institutions visited: the Presidential Palace in Tirana, the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, and the seat of the European Parliament.
