The Philatelic and Numismatic Office celebrates the Pontificate of His Holiness Pope Francis with the issue of a series of postage stamps and a booklet with four values. In addition to the images depicted on the stamps, we have added this year also a brief reference to the homilies to which they refer as a special tribute to the papal ministry. The 0.95 euro value depicts the Holy Father making the sign of the cross during his homily for the opening of the Synod of Bishops on 4 October 2015 when he encouraged the Church to carry out her mission in fidelity, truth and love, “as a voice crying out in the desert”. The 1.00 euro value shows the Holy Father tenderly caressing a child during the General Audience of 18 November 2015; we chose an excerpt of his reflection on the Jubilee and the meaning of the Holy Door, which is open to all, “The Holy Family of Nazareth knows just what an open or closed door means. Christian families make the threshold of their homes a great sign of the Door of the mercy and welcome of God.” The image of the smiling Pope on the 2.30 euro stamp refers to the General Audience of 28 October 2015 when the Pope recalled the 50th Anniversary of the Vatican II Declaration on interreligious dialogue, “Nostra Aetate”, and invited all to “pray for one another: we are brothers and sisters”. The 3.00 euro value depicts the Pope on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June 2015, when he recalled, “these men of God, who came from a distant land to proclaim, at the cost of their lives, the Gospel of Christ to whom they were totally dedicated”.
