The World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world and has been held in Sydney from the 15 to the 20 July 2008. The WYD08 theme was “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). Organised by the Catholic Church, World Youth Day gathers young people from all over the world to build bridgesof friend-ship and hope among continents, peoples and cultures. Sydney was chosen to host the XXIII World Youth Day. The announcement was made by Pope Benedict XVI in Cologne at the end of the XX World Youth Day in August 2005. Through the WYD08 experience, young people from all over the world made a pilgrimage in faith, encounter and experience of God’s love. young people had an opportunity to rediscover their baptismal calling and the centrality of the sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation, and so develop a new apostolic zeal to witness more fully the Gospel in the modern world.
