SILVER CELEBRATORY COIN 5 EURO XLII World Day of Peace «Fighting Poverty to Build Peace»

The World Day of Peace was celebrated for the first time on 1 January 1968. It was instituted by Pope Paul VI in a message of 8 December 1967 in which he wrote: “It is Our desire that then, every year, this commemoration be repeated as a hope and as a promise, at the beginning of the calendar which measures and outlines the path of human life in time, that Peace with its just and beneficent equilibrium may dominate the development of events to come.” From that point onwards the World Day of Peace has been celebrated each year on January 1st. A special papal message for the occasion is sent to world leaders and shared with all humanity as an opportunity for reflection and a way to promote a day of prayer for peace. The theme chosen this year by Benedict XVII for the 42nd annual celebration is: “Fighting Poverty to Build Peace”. The message affirms that the fight against hunger is a priority issue: “At the start of the New Year, then, I extend to every disciple of Christ and to every person of good will a warm invitation to expand their hearts to meet the needs of the poor and to take whatever practical steps are possible in order to help them. The truth of the axiom cannot be refuted: ‘to fight poverty is to build peace’.”
