The healing of the paralytic in Bethesda (John 5:2-18), traditional site of the home of St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, is one of the most well known Gospel passages, and the words of Jesus, "Rise, take up your mat, and walk" are easily recalled by anyone reading them. The exhortation to the paralytic uses the same words one would use for a healthy person, and Jesus does no more than that. The simplicity of these words and the remarkable nature of the event underscore clearly that nothing is impossible for God. At the same time the miracle comes with responsibilities. During a second encounter, Jesus reminds the man: "Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you", as a way to not forget that our own lives must reflect the Lord's goodness. Artist Mariangela Crisciotti shows Jesus with his hand extended towards the man as a symbol of the Father ready to receive us, while the water at his feet symbolizes life, health and rebirth.
