Holy Year of Mercy
"At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective" (Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus). On 8 December 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy will open. The Jubilee will close on 20 November 2016, the liturgical Solemnity of Christ the King. On that day, we shall be filled "with a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving to the Most Holy Trinity for having granted us an extraordinary time of grace". In order to celebrate now and in the future the Jubilee desired by His Holiness Pope Francis, the Philatelic and Numismatic Office will produce two official commemorative medals, one bronze and the other silver. The obverse side of the medals shows the Holy Door in the background and the portrait of the Holy Father; the reverse side features a representation of the parable of the Good Samaritan. The artistic work is by Patrizio Daniele. The Philatelic and Numismatic Office is also offering collectors its first Numismatic Album, a practical and unique folder in which to insert the 2015 annual coin set and the Jubilee Year medal.
