PONTIFICATE OF POPE FRANCIS - 200 EURO GOLD COIN - YEAR 2017

The Cardinal Virtues - Fortitude
As part of the four-year commemorative series on the cardinal virtues, the Philatelic and Numismatic Office dedicates the 200 euro gold coin for 2017 to fortitude with a work produced by artist Orietta Rossi. Fortitude is depicted in a traditional way as a strong warrior with a cross shield and a mace in hand. Behind him is a lion, a symbol of strength from classical iconography. Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause. Pope Francis reminds us that “there are also difficult moments and extreme situations in which the gift of fortitude manifests itself in an extraordinary, exemplary way”. “The Church shines with the testimony of so many brothers and sisters who have not hesitated to give their very lives in order to remain faithful to the Lord and his Gospel.” He adds, however, that each one of us in our daily lives knows men and women “who honour our people, who honour our Church, because they are strong: strong in carrying forward their lives, their family, their work, their faith. “This gift must constitute the tenor of our Christian life, in the ordinary daily routine.”
