Born at Foglizzo in the Diocese of Ivrea on 1 October 1942; ordained priest on 29 June 1966, appointed to the Titular Church of Urbisaglia (Urbs Salvia) on 17 October 1987; consecrated on 28 November 1987; Archbishop, Apostolic Nuncio. Appointed President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and President of the Governatorate of Vatican City State on 1 October 2011. Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Benedict XVI in the consistory of 18 February 2012, of the Deacony of Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia.
S.E.R. Mons. Fernando VÉRGEZ ALZAGA, L.C.
Born in Salamanca (Spain) on 1 March 1945. Religious priest of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ. He was ordained to the priesthood on 26 November 1969.
On 1 August 1972 he began his service to the Holy See at the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes, and from 1984 at the Pontifical Council for the Laity. From 1975, for 23 years, he was personal secretary of the Servant of God Cardinal Eduardo Francisco Pironio. On June 2004 he was appointed Head of Office of the Internet Office of the Holy See of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, and on February 2008 he was appointed Director of the Department of Telecommunications of the Governorate of the Vatican City State.
Appointed Secretary General of the Governorate of the Vatican City State on 30th August 2013 by His Holiness Pope Francis.
