The Governorate of Vatican City State presents the proof versions of the two €2 commemorative coins, dedicated respectively to the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti and to the Holy Year MMXXV [2025], as well as the €5 bimetallic coin commemorating the 20th anniversary of the death of Saint John Paul II, all bearing the year 2025.
The coin dedicated to Michelangelo evokes the great Renaissance master through depictions of his most recognizable art works in the Vatican: the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. His art was able to translate the spiritual dimension and the depth of the Christian faith into forms that have left an indelible mark on the history of art and of the Church.
The coin dedicated to the Holy Year MMXXV, depicting Pope Francis before the Holy Door, takes on a meaning that goes beyond the ritual act of its opening, becoming a symbol of a welcoming Church and of a Jubilee experienced as an “open door” to hope, mercy and reconciliation with God.
On the coin dedicated to Saint John Paul II, the saintly Pope strides forward with determination, his arms outstretched in a gesture that conveys at once an embrace, a blessing and a welcome, giving tangible form to the celebrated appeal he made at the beginning of his pontificate: “Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors to Christ.”
