The initiatives undertaken are aimed at reducing the environmental impact of institutional activities and fostering sustainable models of management and development.

The Governorate of Vatican City State invests in innovative energy solutions to reduce consumption and increase the share of energy generated from renewable sources. In keeping with the call of the Encyclical Laudato si’ to promote a more moderate and responsible use of energy, measures to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and the adoption of low-impact technologies contribute to more careful resource management.

Internal mobility is being progressively oriented toward electric vehicles and low-emission transportation systems. This approach reflects the guidance provided in the Apostolic Exhortation Laudate Deum regarding the need to reduce emissions and promote more sustainable everyday choices, encouraging safe and environmentally responsible mobility.

Programs dedicated to separate waste collection, recycling, and the reduction of single-use plastics support a more responsible and circular model of materials management. This approach reflects the call of the Encyclical Laudato si’ to counter the “throwaway culture” through responsible practices and effective recovery systems.

The care of green spaces and the protection of biodiversity represent an ongoing commitment aimed at preserving the beauty and balance of the natural environments within Vatican territory. In harmony with the vision of Laudato si’, the safeguarding of creation is an integral part of the institutional mission of the Governorate.

Vatican City State actively participates in the international framework for climate protection, contributing official documents that outline its commitments, strategies, and actions to reduce emissions and promote sustainability. In keeping with the principles expressed in Laudato si’ and Laudate Deum, these contributions bear witness to a shared responsibility for the care of creation and for an integral ecological transition.
