Italy, San Marino and the Vatican together Celebrate the Saint of Assisi
Rome, 4 May 2026 – “The Canticle of the Creatures”, one of the most celebrated texts of European spiritual and literary tradition, takes center stage in a shared numismatic project involving the Italian Republic, the Republic of San Marino and the Vatican City State. The result is a triptych of copper coins with a nominal value of €0.75 each, conceived as a single narrative in three chapters dedicated to the work composed by Saint Francis of Assisi around 1224, considered the earliest known text of Italian literature whose author is known.
Friday, April 24 was a special day for 11 children from the “San Francesco e Santa Chiara” nursery school within the Vatican City, as they took part in their first educational field trip outside the school facility. It was a meaningful experience designed to offer the youngest children an opportunity for growth, socialization, and outdoor fun.
For the restoration of four historic statues in the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls
A contribution has been made to carry out restoration work on four sculptures inside the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Specifically, these include the two statues representing Saint Peter and Saint Paul located inside the Basilica itself, and two sculptures situated in the quadriportico depicting the figures of Saint Paul and Saint Luke.
The Vatican Observatory is pleased to report that four asteroids have been named for important figures in the history of the Observatory, including Pope Leo XIII, who re-founded the Observatory in 1891.
Pope Leo XIV signed the oversized replica of the commemorative stamp
During his visit to the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy marking the 325th anniversary of its foundation, Pope Leo XIV signed the oversized reproduction of the commemorative stamp issued by the Postal and Philatelic Service of the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems of the Governorate of the Vatican City State. The event took place on Monday afternoon, April 27, at the historic headquarters of the Pontifical Academy, Palazzo Severoli, located in Piazza della Minerva in Rome.
A “tulip tree” is planted in the Vatican Gardens
To celebrate 40 years of floral decorations donated to the Pope for the Easter celebrations, a Liriodendron tulipifera—known as the tulip tree—has been planted in the Vatican Gardens. The reference to the most famous flower cultivated in the Netherlands could not be missing for this new plant, which since Friday morning, April 24, has taken root.
Stamp, folder, commemorative envelope and special die emissionis postmark for the 325th anniversary of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy
The Postal and Philately Service of the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems of the Governorate of the Vatican City State has produced a commemorative philatelic series, a folder, a commemorative envelope, and a special postmark dedicated to the 325th anniversary of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, a historic institution of the Holy See founded in 1701 with the mission of training diplomats destined to serve the Catholic Church throughout the world.
The Vatican Observatory is making its main telescope available to students at Jesuit universities
Recently, the Observatory successfully completed the robotization and automation of its Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT), located on Mt. Graham in Arizona (USA). This was accomplished thanks to the generosity of the Thomas Lord Charitable Trust. It means, among other things, that astronomers can use the telescope remotely, without having to be up on the mountain. Vatican Observatory (VO) astronomers are now utilizing its exciting capabilities.
The agreement was signed this morning by the President of the Governorate, Sister Raffaella Petrini, and the CEO of the Italian Mint (IPZS) Michele Sciscioli.
Vatican City, 21 April 2026 – Starting today, students of the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (IPZS) have the opportunity to submit creative projects to the Governorate for the production of coins and stamps issued by the Vatican City State.
