Vatican Euro Coin Set Unveiles New Color and Design
The new Vatican collector coin set, the first issued during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, draws direct inspiration from the Pope’s coat of arms, reproduced on the cover with a chalk-effect finish and embossed on an ivory background. Deep blue color highlights the inscriptions and key graphic elements, echoing the colors of the two heraldic fields of the papal coat of arms. This same color palette will become prominent in the new packaging design that will accompany future numismatic issues. This is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a genuine tribute to – and direct reference to – the new pontificate.
The coins contained in the divisional set feature an unprecedented alternation between the Pope’s portrait and the papal coat of arms: the portrait appears on the higher denominations, while the coat of arms is featured on the lower denominations, creating a graphic concept never before seen in the history of Vatican euro coin sets.
The 2-euro coin also incorporates the distinctive elements of Pope Leo XIV’s coat of arms: the lily, symbolizing purity and Marian devotion, and the flaming heart pierced by an arrow above an open book, emblematic of Augustinian spirituality and of the power of the Word of God to transform the human heart.
As always, the set is available in the traditional version containing the eight legal tender euro coins, as well as in a special edition that also includes the €5 bimetallic coin, dedicated this year to the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi.
The €5 coin depicts the renunciation of worldly possessions, the defining moment in Saint Francis’ conversion and a true manifesto of Franciscan spirituality: the abandonment of all material wealth, detachment from the past, and complete trust in God.
With these two issues, the Governorate of Vatican City State commemorates the beginning of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV through a new artistic language that successfully combines tradition and innovation.
