Annual meeting of the Joint Committee between Vatican City State and the European Union on the Monetary Convention
In the Vatican on November 11, in the Bologna Hall of the Apostolic Palace, the annual meeting for 2025 of the Joint Committee between the Vatican City State and the European Union was held in accordance with the provisions of the Monetary Convention of 17 December 2009, regarding the use of the Euro as the official currency within the Vatican State and the procedures for its issuance.
Representing the European Union was the Italian Republic, in association with the European Commission and the European Central Bank, while representing the Vatican City State were delegates from the Secretariat of State, the Supervisory and Financial Information Authority, the Council for the Economy, the Secretariat for the Economy, the Office of the Promoter of Justice, and the Governorate.
Among the items on the agenda, the Committee established the annual ceiling for the issuance and circulation of euro coins, as well as the assessment of the measures adopted by the Vatican City State for the implementation of EU regulations.
In accordance with Article 11, paragraph 2 of the Monetary Convention, the presidency of the Joint Committee is exercised alternately for a period of one year by a representative of the European Union and a representative of the Vatican City State. This year, the presidency is assigned to the Vatican City State. Its delegation—confirmed by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, upon the proposal of the President of the Governatorate, Sr. Raffaella Petrini—was led by the Secretary General of the Governatorate, Giuseppe Puglisi-Alibrandi, as the Joint Committee’s president.
