Mobile Post Office in Saint Peter’s Square on its way to be demolished

The mobile Post Office in Saint Peter’s Square has officially “retired”. It made its last journey, heading to the junkyard, on Thursday morning, 5 December.

The Franzisella mobile Post office (license plate: SCV 01245) began its service at the Vatican on 20 December 2010, the result of a decision to expand the Post Office’s service in an effort to better reach the demands of the faithful and tourists. It was located on the left side of Saint Peter’s Square. In 1999, it was registered to Poste Italiane as a trailer vehicle, and was used on various occasions to maintain continuity in the postal service. With three 14-metre long and 2.5-metre wide axles, it weighed 240,000 kilograms. It will be replaced with a new mobile Post Office in the same location, on 19 December.

The departure of the post office took place in the presence of the Director of the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems, Mr. Antonino Intersimone, and the Office Manager of the Post and Philately Service, Fr. Felice Bruno.
