Transforming waste into a resource: the collaboration between the Governatorate and the Hera Group

New electric vehicle for waste collection

In keeping with its goal of reaching zero emissions, another step has been added to the “Ecological Conversion 2030” program of the Vatican City State by transforming waste into a resource and reducing the environmental impact through renewable energy sources.

A new 100% electric Mitsubishi Fuso vehicle for the collection of undifferentiated urban waste has now entered into service, used in the activities of emptying the waste bins located in St. Peter’s Square.

The new service to improve CO₂ emissions was created through the collaboration between the Governorate of the Vatican City State and the Hera Group.

The vehicle, equipped with a waste container that has a capacity of 3,500 kg and a range of 60 kilometers, will contribute to improving waste management practices and will raise the sustainability standards of Vatican City.

The vehicle has been assigned to the Gardens and Environmental Service of the Directorate of Infrastructure and Services of the Governorate, which is responsible for waste collection.

The service is part of the agreement signed on 12 December 2025 between the Governorate of the Vatican City State and the Hera Group, through its company Herambiente S.p.A. The aim, as indicated in the Encyclical Laudato si’, is to adopt a circular model of waste production.
