New numismatic issues, year 2025, of the Governorate of the Vatican City State

The Governorate of the Vatican City presents a new and significant selection of numismatic issues for the year 2025, an expression of faith, institutional continuity, and high artistic value. The coins offered for sale accompany some of the most significant moments in the life of the Church: the time of anticipation, the Jubilee, the hope in the Resurrection, and the forgiveness that renews.

The sequence begins with the commemoration of the Sede Vacante MMXXV, the solemn period between the end of a pontificate and the election of the new Successor of Peter. The 2-euro coin conveys its profound meaning through the coat of arms of Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, surmounted by the umbraculum and the crossed keys, symbols of papal authority entrusted to custody and administration. In the surrounding ring, the dove of the Holy Spirit recalls the invocation that accompanies the discernment of the Cardinals, underscoring the continuity and stability of the Church even in the periods of expectation.

This same period is also reflected in the 5-euro silver FDC coin, which entrusts its message to art and contemplation. Inspired by Guido Reni’s Descent of the Holy Spirit, the coin isolates the uppermost section of the fresco in the Vatican Apostolic Palaces: a choir of angels encircling the central dove, capturing the invisible yet decisive moment of divine action. It is the image of a Church that looks toward heaven, aware that every authentic choice is born from guidance that comes from above.

Within the context of the Jubilee Year 2025, the gaze then turns to hope, entrusted to the figure of Maria Stella Maris, the central subject of the proof divisional series featuring the 20-euro silver coin. In this representation, the Virgin welcomes and protects Peter’s boat, supporting the waters upon which it advances with confidence. Her mantle separates the calm from the storm, while the Star of the Sea illuminates the path of the Church and of humanity, offering refuge, strength, and direction during the Holy Year.

The Jubilee finds a second, powerful expression in the proof divisional series with the 50-euro gold coin, dedicated to the Pardon of Assisi. Its roots lie in the night of 1216, when Saint Francis, praying before the Crucifix, asked for mercy not for himself but for all. That plea has crossed the centuries and becomes a concrete sign of reconciliation and divine love, still inviting people today to be touched by a forgiveness that does not judge but heals.

The series is completed in the light of Easter and the Resurrection, commemorated by the 25-euro colored silver coin. The Risen Christ rises from the empty tomb, bearing with Him the victory of life over death, while the open Sepulchre becomes a universal symbol of rebirth and hope. In this work, metal and color come together in a visual narrative, capable of restoring the enduring echo of that proclamation which continues to resound in the heart of humanity: the light has conquered the darkness and will never cease to shine.
