Visit of the “Italian and International” Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums

The members of the “Italian and International” Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, led by Sabrina Zappia, President and Amy Gallant Sullivan, Chair of the Chapter, visited the Vatican Museums on Friday afternoon, May 23.
They were welcomed by Giuseppe Puglisi-Alibrandi, Secretary General of the Governorate of the Vatican City State and by Monsignor Terence Hogan, Coordinator of the Office for Relations with the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.
The Secretary General thanked them for their valuable contribution in supporting the restoration and conservation of the heritage preserved in the Vatican Museums.
The members of the “Italian and International” Chapter visited the Raphael Rooms, in particular the Hall of Constantine, the Sistine Chapel, the Hall of Indirizzi, and the Hall of Pius IX. On the Pinacoteca terrace, during a moment of relaxation they were able to enjoy musical entertainment.
Among the projects managed by the “Italian and International” Chapter, is the restoration of the Apollo of Belvedere, one of the most admired ancient statues in Rome. For this important restoration in 2021 the Chapter helped secure support from the Bank of America Art Conservation Project. The Bank of America Art Conservation Project provides grants to museums for the conservation of historically or culturally significant works of art that are in danger of deterioration.
Prior to the Bank of America grant, in late 2020, the “Italian and International” Chapter secured funding from the Illinois and New York Chapters for preliminary studies of the Apollo Belvedere before planning the restoration itself.
During his pontificate Pope Julius II (1503-1513) had the second century marble statue moved to the Octagonal Courtyard, the placement of the statue marked the first step in the origins of the Vatican Museums. The Apollo Belvedere is considered one of the highest forms of artistic skill and is one of the most admired masterpieces in the world.
