A masterpiece restored thanks to the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums

Maria Martinetti Stiavelli (1864-1937), a painter from Rome, was only 23 years old when she painted Malaria (1887), a large painting on canvas, measuring 140.5 x 221.5 centimetres. The impressive painting, which had been held in storage at the Vatican Museums, underwent restoration works thanks to the precious contribution of the Canadian Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.

A common journey

“Forty-one years of history of the Patrons of the Arts of the Vatican Museums are the result of a common journey”, Sr. Raffaella Petrini, General Secretary of the Governorate of Vatican City State, said in her greeting to the annual meeting of the Chapters of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums held at the Taylor Education Center in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon, 22 September, the second to last day of her visit to the United States of America.

This year, the Nativity Scene that is set up in Saint Peter’s Square each year for the Christmas season, will be donated by Grado, a lagoon rich with history and tradition located in the Province of Gorizia. The Christmas tree, a majestic red fir tree standing more than 29 metres tall, will be donated by Ledro in the Province of Trento, and raised beside the Nativity Scene.

Act of Entrustment to Mary

A Korean presence in the Vatican Gardens to implore Mary for universal peace is the hope with which a mosaic of Our Lady of Peace Korean was blessed in the Vatican Gardens. The ceremony took place on Friday afternoon, 20 September, during the liturgical memorial of the Martyrs, Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the first ordained priest of Korea, Saint Paul Chông Hasang and their companions.
