The Carabinieri Officers’ Academy is a military institute at university level that oversees the training and continuous professional development of the Corps’ officer cadre. Since 10 November 1976, its headquarters have been located in the current base on Via Aurelia, named after Carabiniere Major Ugo De Carolis, posthumously awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor, who was executed by the Nazis at the Fosse Ardeatine in Rome during World War II.

The Institute is equipped with numerous spaces and modern infrastructures supporting training activities, including facilities dedicated to academic events and meetings, multimedia rooms for study and consultation, an internal digital network accessible to users, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, as well as a covered shooting range.

With regard to educational activities, numerous foreign officers are admitted to both basic training courses and advanced professional development courses for Carabinieri officers. Since the 2007/2008 academic year, officials of the Gendarmerie of the Vatican City State have also participated in the lectures.

Candidates assigned to the standard career path begin their initial training at the Military Academy of Modena, where they complete a two-year cycle culminating in the award of a university degree in the legal field and the conferment of the initial officer rank. Their academic and professional training then continues for a further three years at the Corps’ higher training institute, at the end of which they obtain a master’s degree in law. On a voluntary basis, it is also possible to earn a degree in Internal and External Security Sciences, in cooperation with the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
